
Network of building renovation projects
The Network of building renovation projects was initiated at the beginning of 2024 by the REHOUSE project, and had its kick-off meeting on March 12th, 2024. The aim of this network is to collaborate and to use any synergies in reaching out to stakeholders of the construction sector and applied sciences. The network currently consists of 18 projects funded under Horizon Europe.

Building Performance Digitalisation and Dynamic Logbooks for Future Value-Driven Services
CHRONICLE is a 3.5-year Horizon Europe project (2022-2025) that aims to improve building performance in order to increase energy efficiency, comfort and well-being. CHRONICLE aims to deliver a holistic framework for assessing the life-cycle performance for different building variants. CHRONICLE supports the sustainable design of new and existing construction projects by focusing on efficient renovation procedures and investment decision-making processes.

The Support service for Citizen-led renovation (CLR) is an EU initiative aiming to empower existing and prospective energy communities to put citizens in the driver’s seat for energy-saving renovation projects.
CLR’s support service for four selected pilots in Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and Bulgaria is underway to strengthen community building and assist in replicating programmes for energy renovations of buildings, including insulation, new technical systems and installing renewables.

Demonstrating Real and Affordable Sustainable Building Solutions with Top-level whole life cycle performance and Improved Circularity.
Drastic is a pioneering collaboration to transform the European built environment via a collection of circular, low carbon, affordable and innovative 'Demonstrators' across Europe. Through five ‘Demonstrator’ pilot projects, Drastic aims to showcase varied and innovative solutions to reduce whole life carbon and the climate impact of construction across the entire construction value chain in Europe, whilst increasing and improving circularity within the built environment. The Drastic Demonstrators will target different layers of buildings, to achieve reduction of operational and embodied carbon emissions and foster material reclamation and reuse. Drastic will show how these solutions, combined with improved business models, can lead the way towards a whole life cycle decarbonisation of the European Union (EU) building stock by 2050.

Energy and Seismic AFfordable rEnovation solutions
e-SAFE aims to contribute to the deep renovation of EU building stock by developing an innovative, market-ready system that combines decarbonization goals with earthquake resilience, indoor comfort, reduced implementation time and costs, affordable financing, reduced occupants’ disturbance, increased aesthetic and functional attractiveness. CBDC powered Smart PerFORrmance contracTs for Efficiency, Sustainable, Inclusive, Energy use
The overall vision of FORTESIE is to design, demonstrate, validate and replicate innovative renovation packages in the building industry with Smart Performance-Based guarantees and financing, aiming at Efficient, Sustainable and Inclusive Energy (ESIE) use to accelerate the Renovation Wave in Europe. The renovation packages will combine state-of-the-art construction materials and technologies (prefabricated facades, BIPV, heat pumps, etc.), innovative digital technologies for measurement and verification of building performance improvements, and attractive financing schemes (e.g. contractual frameworks for smart performance guarantees, financing mechanisms, engagement techniques, green-euros, etc.), to raise the overall EPC value proposition. The renovation packages will be tailored to specific target groups needs and optimised to improve the ESIE performance considering energy, CO2 and comfort.

Energy and Seismic AFfordable rEnovation solutions
The Horizon Europe project INBUILT aims to bring a shift in the European construction industry by integrating circular economy and digitalisation. By using locally sourced materials and reusing components, INBUILT seeks to reduce waste and strengthen the resilience of the construction sector. INBUILT’s strategy involves the up-scaling and demonstration of 10 innovative products and systems, including large-sized rammed earth blocks, recycled fired and non-fired bricks, hybrid straw-clay boards, recycled concrete and recycled concrete blocks, prefabricated waste wood external and internal wall elements, smart windows with recycled glass and bio-PUR frames, bio-based prefabricated curtain walls, recycled waste paper and textile fibre insulation mats, bio-based recycled insulation sheet panels/infill and second life photovoltaic panels.

Open innovation living labs for Positive Energy Neighbourhoods
The main objective of oPEN Lab is to upgrade the existing buildings and district facilities in specific neighbourhoods in the cities of Tartu, Pamplona and Genk to fully operational Positive Energy Neighbourhoods and operate them as Positive Energy Neighbourhood Living Labs. Renewable and Environmentally Sustainable Kit for building INtegration.
The RE-SKIN project will develop a multifunctional package capable of transforming an existing, energy-intensive building into a modern, efficient and, above all, sustainable structure. By integrating renewable energy, sustainable materials, and Information and communication technologies (ICT), RE-SKIN offers a holistic and systemic solution for the energy retrofit and smart upgrade of residential, commercial and public buildings. The system’s special configuration and flexibility make it suitable for application all over Europe. RE-SKIN focuses on improving buildings renovation, addressing the critical need to fully decarbonise the building sector by 2050, at least double the annual renovation rate by 2030, and ensure indoor comfort, even during heat waves.

Sustainable Solutions for Affordable Retrofit of Domestic Buildings
SUREFIT demonstrated fast-track renovation of existing domestic buildings by integrating innovative, cost-effective and environmentally conscious prefabricated technologies. This aimed to reach the target of near zero energy through reducing heat losses through building envelope and energy consumption by heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting, while increasing the share of renewable energy in buildings.
